A client contacted the company he had worked for 20 years ago regarding his pension benefit. The company told the client to call an insurance company because they were holding his benefit. So, the client called the insurance company and was told to call back to the company he had worked for. This went on for two years.
The client then called a federal agency, but they could not resolve this issue. So, the client called the Mid America Pension Project (MAPP).
Upon review of the paperwork, the attorney found that the client was owed a pension benefit. The attorney sent letters to both the employer and the insurance company. The insurance company and the employer both responded that they did not have the benefit. The attorney followed up with the insurance company, which stated that it had never held the pension benefit. The attorney reached out to the employer, and the pension department insisted that it did not hold the pension benefit for the client.
The attorney sent a letter to the company’s legal counsel and did not receive a response. So, the attorney sent an email and called the chief counsel of the company stating that the company was violating federal law, and that the client was owed a pension benefit.
The next day, the plan’s attorney contacted the Mid America Pension Project attorney. The MAPP attorney provided all the documentation proving the client was owed a pension benefit. Upon review, the plan’s attorney found that the client had the correct historical record and was granted a lump sum benefit. The client was very happy because the benefit allowed him to pay off his home equity loan.
