Trellis mourns the tragic deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of federal agents. Our hearts go out to the families and friends who have lost their loved ones.
As an area agency on aging, our organization is charged to support the well-being of older adults in the Twin Cities metro region. Many older adults we serve directly and those our partners serve are anxious, afraid and angry due to the actions of immigration enforcement agencies. They are afraid to go to work, to be in community and to receive supports that keep them healthy and connected.
We stand with our community in calling for federal, state and local leaders to take immediate action to protect the safety and rights of all Minnesotans regardless of age, race or immigration status.
In times of great fear and uncertainty, it is important to remember we can all make a difference in the lives of those around us. Below are a few resources to help you support older adults in your community:
- Visit the Minnesota Aging and Disability Resources website and search for resources in your local area. You can search for specific organizations, or you can search by topical area (immigrant-serving organizations, legal aid, etc.).
- United Way’s 211 helpline offers free, confidential information about health and human services on a 24/7 basis.
- Check in on your neighbors. Ask if you can help them by picking up groceries, shoveling a driveway or walking a dog. Small acts of kindness can go a long way to help people feel less isolated.
However you show up, thank you for strengthening our community.
