Note: In May 2023, Trellis will release RFPs for all the Older Americans Act Title III services we fund. The Equity Assessment we completed in 2021 provides a roadmap for a more equitable process for making funding awards. We are republishing this post to bring the findings and recommendations back to mind.
Trellis is pleased to release a new report, “Equity Assessment of Access to Title III Funding.” The Equity Assessment by SDK Communications + Consulting provides a compelling snapshot of the ways different systems of inequity come together to create inequities for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) elders aging in their communities.
A lifetime of inequities in income and housing stability lead to inequities in aging at home. A lifetime of inequities in employment and income lead to inequities in elders’ retirement income or ability to retire, as well as access to healthcare services.
The Older Americans Act Title III funds that Trellis administers are intended to help low income and minority adults age in their communities. The results of this assessment show that broader inequities in income, health, housing and more make our work to fund Title III services a critical first step in helping BIPOC elders age in their communities – but only a first step.
This report will not sit on a shelf; it’s informing how we look at becoming a more inclusive and equitable organization.
