A client called Trellis Pension and Retirement Rights for some help with his 401(k) retirement plan. He had been trying to withdraw his money for over a month because he got behind on his bills and was being threatened with foreclosure.
The client could not access his account by computer because this was something his partner usually did, and they had recently passed away. The client is not computer savvy and is legally blind. He called the pension plan administrator several times to make the withdrawal but the plan kept telling him that he needed a passcode that would be sent by mail. Every time the client received the passcode it would not work. He would then call the plan again only to receive the same run-around.
The Mid-American Pension Project attorney stepped in and called the plan with the client. The plan, once again, informed the client that he needed a passcode. The attorney advised the client to wait for the passcode. After receiving the passcode, the client called the attorney back. Once again, the password did not work.
The attorney and the client initiated a conference call with the plan. The attorney explained to the representative the issue and asked for a manager. The manager was able to assist the client immediately and client was able to withdraw his money and pay his bills. The client was sure that he would never have received his money without the intervention of the project.
