Persistence Pays Off

September 30, 2025

Photo of a red rotary phone.

A client in her late eighties was trying to get an income verification letter from her pension plan so she could move into an apartment. The client’s house was in disrepair, and she was unable to take care of it anymore. The client put her house for up for sale but had to take it off the market because the apartment complex would not approve her tenancy without income verification from the plan.

Although the client had been receiving half of her late husband’s pension for several years, every time she called the pension plan the representatives informed her that they had no record of her receiving a monthly check. The client called the plan multiple times and on a few occasions the representative merely hung up on her after she was told she did not have an account. After weeks of not being able to get the documentation, the client called Trellis Pension and Retirement Rights.

The Mid America Pension Project spoke with the client and then got busy locating and requesting the income verification letter that the client desperately needed. The project attorney, with the client on the phone, started by calling the plan the client had already called many times. Like the client, the representative of the plan told the attorney that the client was not in their system. When the attorney explained that she had been getting a check and asked for the manager, the representative refused, indicating that a manager would have the same information as she gave. The representative hung up.

After a few more phone calls and some digging, the attorney finally located a number for a person who worked at the headquarters of the company. This person was extremely helpful and had the manager of the department return the attorney’s call. On the same day the income verification letter was sent to the client. The client was extremely grateful for the attorney’s help, stating that without it, she would never have been able to move.
