Are you interested in educating older adults, caregivers, and the community at large? Our Volunteer Outreach Presenters provide educational presentations across the seven-county metro area on a variety of aging topics, such as the basics of Medicare, how to prevent healthcare fraud & scams, and how to utilize the Senior LinkAge Line (SLL). Our Outreach Presenters are part of a strong, tight-knit team that lead presentations and educational workshops in-person and online via Zoom.

Volunteer Role
Volunteer Outreach Presenters are trained to help others:
- Understand their chosen presentation topic(s).
- (Only for volunteers interested in Medicare presentations) Understand the basics of Medicare and additional insurance options and answer questions about Medicare enrollment. Explore low- and modest-income programs that can lower out-of-pocket Medicare costs.
- Identify, report, and prevent Medicare fraud and abuse.
- Learn about SLL and Trellis services.
- Educate the public on the SLL.
Volunteer Requirements
- Intermediate computer skills. Being comfortable with using Zoom and Microsoft applications (Teams, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Effective communication skills and comfort with public speaking.
- Reliable transportation and internet.
- Ability to work independently and make appropriate decisions.
- Compliance with agency non-conflict of interest, confidentiality, and other policies.
- Sensitivity to the needs of older adults, persons with disabilities, and other diverse populations.
- Desire to assist older adults and caregivers in understanding Medicare and other presentation topics.
Volunteer Training
- (Only for volunteers interested in Medicare presentations) Completion of State Health Insurance Assistance Program certification.
- Onboard and train with Volunteer & Outreach staff.
- Shadow one or more presentations led by an experienced volunteer or staff member.
- Co-lead one or more presentations with an experienced volunteer to demonstrate appropriate knowledge and presentation skills.
- Complete presentation labs with a partner and receive sign off on presentation before presenting to the public.
- Receive ongoing training sessions, supervision, and shadow support visits.
- We recommend all new volunteer presenters attend as many of our free presentations as they can.
Time Investment
Trellis is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and presentations usually occur during this timeframe; there are occasional evening and weekend presentations. We ask volunteers for a minimum of 4 hours per month and a minimum commitment of one year to the program. Volunteers are responsible for logging their volunteer, educational, and training time in our online portal.
Volunteer Setting
Presentations are held at various community partner sites across the seven-county metro area and online, via Zoom. Volunteers work under the direct supervision of Volunteer & Outreach staff.
